Zip in the Sky

Sky Trek starts with a tour in the Sky Tram to reach the top of the Arenal reserve, then begins a tour of adventure full of adrenaline above the treetops, which consists on a system of zip lines, that allows you to observe the rainforest and its landscape from a different perspective, safely in an innovative and different system.

The tour includes 8 cross-sectional cables that together have a total length of 1.7 miles with distances from 100 to 2460 feet, and with a maximum height of 660 feet, which exceed the treetops providing a panoramic view of the Arenal volcano and lake.

New Sky Trek Night Tour

Experience a totally new experience, the new Sky Trek Night tour combines the conventional SkyTrek but at night and with the possibility to observe the volcano eruptions and the nocturnal wildlife.

Explore the rain forest

Sky Tram is a tour for all ages and even for people with some disability, thanks to the space of the gondolas that fit a wheelchair inside.

The tour starts in the reception and reaches a wide observation deck at the highest point of the Arenal Reserve, from where you can observed the rain forest, the Arenal volcano and lake. The journey in Sky Tram takes around 20 minutes with the possibility of intermediate with short stops that will be supplemented with information of a naturalist guide.

Once you have reached the observation deck, you can enjoy a walk through one of the trails with duration of 30 minutes.

The Pacuare River is one of the best choices for your adventure treks in Costa Rica. Another trip in the country does not exist that offers you a perfect blend of wilderness exposure and excitement, both in one day.

Pacuare is world famous for its sheer beauty. A true river gorge, it is flanked by steep, green walls. Here you enjoy the feeling of total isolation from urban life and the realness of being connected with nature. You see waterfalls cascade into the river from both sides as colorful, tropical birds fly right over your head. Amazing views of this virgin tropical rainforest area, appear before your eyes as you descend this true exploratory land. Wildlife is abundant, with sloth, toucans, parrots, coatis, morpho butterflies and colorful frogs being common sights.

The white water that is equally exciting. It is not an overly challenging river, but it has a lot rapids, therefore giving you an adventure filled with lots of fun. The 18 mile one day run includes a total of 52 rapids. Few rivers in the world can offer you so many.

Upon arrival to the river we will gear you up with a life jacket, helmet and paddle and then brief you with a full safety orientation talk. Finally, it is time to take off down the rapids!

The first 4 miles consist of fun class II-III rapids which is a perfect time to test your new river skills and gain confidence in your team. Here you can find pockets of secondary growth forest that is extremely beautiful. After about 40 minutes we will enter the famous Pacuare River Gorge, which is 5 miles of some of the best white water Costa Rica has to offer. The rapids here are "Terciopelo snake", "Double drop", "Upper and Lower Huacas", "Pin ball" to name a few. You will also see the Huacas watefall, a 150 foot dramatic drop into the river.

After the gorge the rivers opens up to a 5 mile stretch on the Valle del Pacuare, where the river has a different character. It is wide open, which gives you the opportunity to rest a bit and take the opportunity to do some wildlife spotting. The main rapids here are "Cimarrones", "The Play Hole", "El Indio" and "Magnetic Rock". The forest remains just as lush, and the rapids just as fun.

We finish in Siquirres, at our own private Exploration Center, where you can take a shower, change and enjoy the gardens and terrace while having a beer or two and reflecting with your new friends about the great adventure you just shared

Another option for a half-day tour are the Venado Caves where in between the darkness, the bats, the tarantulas, stretch places and the water, you will be able to observe a big quantity of stalactites and stalagmites that give this singular place a great scenic form.
This tour starts at 8:00a.m. with destiny to the small town of the Venado in a confortable microbus you will be able to appreciate the panoramic view of the north area, such as the green scenario and the pastures for the cattle.
In the way to our primary objective big plantations of yuca, sugar cane and oranges can be appreciated.
Then we will reach the entrance to the caves where all the instructions will be given in order to make your stay in the caverns more satisfactory together with the safety equipment and recomendations.
To continue we will make a hiking of around 3 kilometers in 3hours and a half and we will be able to observe how the stalactites and stalagmites and the big formations of coral that take natural forms, were created through time.
A part of this caves is covered by a subterraneous river that follows the way to another area called "the windows" and in order to get there you will have to walk with the water up to your waist makig your adventure even more exciting and finally coming out of the caves, taking a shower and then returning to your hotels in La fortuna.

Cerro Chato Hike

We begin the tour in Fortuna and ride in a minibus around Volcano Arenal to the Hotel “Observatory Lodge”. There we start the steep hike to the summit of “Cerro Chato”. On the way we cross a very compact first rainforest. From the summit we walk down to the green lagoon, an old volcano-crater, where we can swim, take pictures or discover the surroundings.

Another short climb and we walk down through rainforest. With a bit of luck we discover birds or other wild animals. Alone to see the huge plants make this tour worthwhile. The hike down gives us a beautiful view of Arenal and the valley of San Carlos.
To finish this exciting tour we visit the waterfall of Fortuna. This asks for a 15-minute hike downwards; the beautiful landscape and a refreshing bath in the river reward us for the effort. After about 2 hours we return to Fortuna.
The day includes: 4 hours hiking (not just easy), aprox. 2 hours stay near the waterfall and a 45-minute bus drive.

The Monteverde Cloud Forest Bilogical Preserve is one of the most famous cloud forest reserve in the world and one of the most important pretected areas in Costa Rica, chosen as one of the seven wonders of Costa Rica.

The surprising biodiversity found at Monteverde Reserve is a result of the geographic, topographic and climatic conditions there. Its forests contain four ecological "Life Zones". This gives rise to differing ecosystems inhabited by hundreds of species of mammals, birds, butterflies, amphibians, reptiles, insects and spiders, as well as a diversity of mosses, epiphytes, vines and other plants and trees typical of cloud forests.

Join us for a great day of rafting! Set deep in the Costa Rican rain forests and fed by waters from the Poas volcano, the Toro river winds 13Km (about 9 miles) through the canyon filled with dramatic scenery and heart pumping excitement. The Toro River offers some of Costa Rica’s best white water with big waves, technical rapids and continuous whitewater.

Our journey begins with a 1 hr scenic drive through the Eastern portion of central Costa Rica through the beautiful pineapple, papaya and yucca fields with Volcano Arenal set in the backdrop. After hiking for 30 minutes in an astonishingly green jungle, just like in the moooooovies!!, we arrived at this magnificent waterfall pouring down from 200 feet of rocks. Amazing. If you feel like having a refreshing swim after a sweating hike, the place is totaly indicated for it. This has been for us one of the most thrilling experience in Monteverde. From the road that leads to the Monteverde reserve, we walked all the way down to San Luis for 1h30 but for 13$ US, we took a cab to come back up because the raod is very steep. For further information, feel comfortable ta ask Rony at the Sleepers, he is always willing to take time to inform you. Enjoy.

The butterfly garden consists mainly of various gardens containing habitats mimicing all the various Costa Rica habitats and their resident butterflies. At the beginning of the tour, the most excited tour guide I've ever experienced showed us the butterflies' cousins - spiders and bugs. The Bat Jungle is a wonderful way to spend an hour on a rainy afternoon in Monteverde! We happen to think bats are cool but even if you don't it is a truly fascinating tour and you will learn a lot and enjoy yourself. Our tour guide, Vino, a Belgian Biologist , led us through the informative part of the exhibit, and he was very entertaining and passionate about his subject. The Bat habitat is fabulous! The habitat is glass enclosed (so they won't be flying around you). The bats look very content and you can watch them eat their snacks, nurse their young and fly around. There's a microphone system so you can hear them too. It is just amazing to get this kind of up close glimpse into their lives. They are really cute!! Even if you are not a bat fan, they are very important to our eco-system and the bat jungle raises awareness and is involved in their conservation and study. Do you like bananas? Bats are major pollinators. So if you'd like to support a good cause and spend some time with awesome creatures you may not be that familiar with, we highly recommend visiting the bat jungle.

Located high on the Caribbean slopes of the Cordillera de Tilarán (5, 000 feet, 1,500 m), the Continental Divide of Costa Rica, the Santa Elena Cloud Forest Reserve is one of the first community managed reserves in the country. With the help of Youth Challenge International, a Canadian Non-profit Organization, the Costa Rican government, and the Santa Elena Community, the Reserve officially opened in March 1992.

The philosophy of the Reserve is unique in that long term sustainability is not only a concern of the Reserve, but of the community as a whole. Proceeds from entrance fees, guided tours and the souvenir shop are either reinvested in the management of the reserve or are channeled to a local high school to help upgrade technology, and fund courses in environmental education, biology, agriculture, languages and tourism. In using the Reserve as a natural classroom, students and teachers harness an unlimited educational resource that can be used for anything from studying tropical plant ecology to leading tours.

With over 8 miles (12 km) of trails, 3 overview points, and an observation tower, The Santa Elena Cloud Forest Reserve makes for an exceptional hiking experience. Since wildlife is more active in the morning, it's best to arrive early. We also have a cafe that serves light meals, a visitor center with interpretive exhibits made by students, and a gift shop. Guided tours are available (see below) and rubber boots, ponchos.

Hiking Information:

The Santa Elena Reserve comprises an area of 310 hectare or 765 acres, and together with the Children's Eternal Rainforest, the Arenal Conservation Area and the Monteverde Cloud Forest Preserve constitute a contiguous conservation area of approximately 28,000 hectares or 69,000 acres. Plans are underway to raise funds to buy and restore adjacent farmlands for future inclusion into the Santa Elena Reserve. Conservation efforts in the area are concentrating on establishing forest corridors radiating from the central conservation area down to lower altitudes as many of the forest fauna, such as the Resplendent Quetzal, American Pumas, Jaguars, Ocelots, and Red Brocket Deer require large territories in which to forage and breed.

San José: Bus leave at 6:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m.
Puntarenas: 4:30 a.m., 6:00 a.m., and 3:00 p.m. (You make connection to Montezuma, Mal Pais, Santa Teresa - First you catch the Ferry, Manuel Antonio, Jacó, Dominical, Tamarindo, Sámara and other destinations)
Tilarán: bus le ave at 7:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. (You make connection to La Fortuna - Arenal Volcano area.)
